The Walther League was founded in 1893 and named
after an American Lutheran patriarch, C. F. W. Walther (1811-1887). The League
grew rapidly after World War I. Between 1930 and 1960 the League grew from
1,600 to over 5,000 local societies across the U.S., with a central headquarters
located in Chicago’s loop. Many Leaguers went on to become Lutheran church
leaders, among them the former Illinois Senator (and presidential candidate)
